The Bon Fire and Marshmallows

We had a very busy day today. For the most part, our days are always busy. However, today I wanted to get to several garage sales, drop some things off at a friends house, pick cherries, and do a Bon Fire so that the kids could make Smores.

I think I ended up picky about 4 pounds of cherries today. The cherries on our tree typically aren't ready until mid July. We have a little bit of a later season because growing starts a little later at this elevation. The pounds that I picked today were just the ones I could reach without the ladder. I did do some climbing of the tree but I am not nearly as agile as I once was. Leandra, Shyanne, and Shaunisee did some climbing, too. Shyanne nearly fell out of the tree but ended up wrapping her arms and legs around the branch and swinging like a hammock. She was perfectly fine just hanging there until I was able to climb down to get her.

The best part of the day was the Bon Fire, of course. We roasted hot dogs first and tossed cans of corn in the fire to warm them up. Then, we tried our hand at toasting the marshmallows. Leandra did fairly well although she lost her marshmallow a few times.

This was Kaiser's first experience with toasting marshmallows. He was very cute, though. he got his stick and pushed a marshmallow on it and proceeded to stick it right in to the fire. He then took it out and said it was ready. I helped him a little with that and finally got it perfect. (I tend to be a perfectionist when it comes to the proper color of golden brown.) I made his smore and handed it to him. He was so excited about it. After finally getting it in his hands, all he wanted was the chocolate out of the middle. Oh well, I guess I can't blame him for wanting that.

Shyanne touched one of the rocks around the fire and got a nice blistery burn on her right pointer finger. She was a trooper, though. We had all come in the house and were getting ready for showers when she said,"I didn't know that it was hot but I touched it and it hurts." Poor girl...I looked at her finger and it had a blister on it. I asked her what she touched and she said it was one of the rocks around the fire. She has been stung by a bee 2 times already and barely cried either time. She's a tough cookie and so brave.

  1. Cute! In the picture, Kaiser looks like Megan on most days - nothing but a diaper on!

We love having fires in our backyard too. Something about the smell of a camp fire leftover on your clothes...mmmm!

  2. He is in a diaper most of the time...at least when it is hot out. He is usually all covered in dirt as well. At least marshmallows are easy to wash off. Just a little warm water.
